Three Web Analytic Tools for Webmasters The Good, Bad and the Ugly

How many web analytics tools are there? There’s Google Analytic, Webtrends, and more. But which one is the best? Is there any difference between them? Which one should you buy for your website to get better data about your visitors’ behavior on the site?

This article will help answer these questions with three different tools that each have their own strengths and weaknesses.

The first tool is Google Analytics. While it’s a great starting point for beginners, you’ll need to buy premium features if you want more in-depth reporting and access to your raw data. If you’re using the free version of this service then there are going to be some limitations on what reports can show up as well as which metrics they can measure. In addition, many people find that the interface is not very user friendly or intuitive so unless you have someone with experience working with web analytics tools doing all of these things for you, getting good information from GA might prove difficult at times.

The second tool I’m looking at today is Webtrends (also sometimes called WBT). This software provides powerful customization options much like Google Analytics does. A major drawback with this software is that it’s not very user friendly or easy to navigate. Another issue you’ll run into if you buy the service is their extensive list of supported tags which can slow down your site loading time due to all of these extra requests being made back and forth between your visitor’s browser and webtrends servers.

The third tool I want to look at today is called Piwik, also known as Matomo in some regions outside of North America. This analytics platform has a lot more powerful reporting capabilities than both Google Analytics and Webtrends do even though it doesn’t have quite as many customization options built into its interface like WBT does. The only downside here are that there are no mobile apps yet so if you want to view your analytics data on the go, this probably isn’t going to be a good option for you.

Conclusion: If you’re looking for an easy-to-use interface that’s not overloaded with customization options then Piwik is worth checking out first and foremost. Webtrends should only ever be considered as your second choice because of its lack of user friendliness. Google Analytics should really only buy premium services unless you have access to someone who knows what they are doing when it comes down to web analytic tools. Otherwise, both GA and WBT can prove difficult at times since each one has their own quirks or annoying features that prevent either platform from being fully functional in some way or another. In
